In the middle of nowhere

I worked as deck hand on the Starlight fishing vessel,
that countinuosly trawls the ocean between Australia & Indonesia,
up to 30 hours’ journey north of Darwin, following the giant schools of fish
and trying to find the best spots to lower their bait-traps.
All around is emptiness, endless ocean in all directions, ravaged hands, a bundles of nerves, the burning sun, tough physical labour and a punishing daily schedule that starts with a 2 am alarm and ends 16 hours later with sleep in a tiny bunk.
In three weeks, we’ ll burn 20,000 litres of fuel, collect 24 tonnes of fish and take half a day’ s break.
D, Grahaiam, Terry, the crew members working with me, they are so far from Sydney and its common lifestyle, all they have is the sea, it pays well if you have the skills.
They don’ t know where else to go, they have no education, nor a driver’ s license.
They are real men.
They are fishermen.
An incredibly long time in the sea to lay the foundations for a better future,
maybe in Lombok, Indonesia, where Captain Colin dreams to move one day..
For now, the ocean is home.

In these years of virtual reality,
where children have stopped playing the war in the courtyard
and they do it just in front of the computer,
there are those who don’t want to miss the adrenalin on the skin.
Weekly, groups of fans of military tactics come in lost places.
Wearing uniforms and weapon in hand, simulate real battles,
sometimes rebuilding real wars episodes.
Of course they do with “toy” guns, their rifles shoot plastic pellets.
What drives these people playing the war today that information bombards us
with pictures of pain and suffering associated with conflicts?
How could it be that the images of a game you can confuse
with images of a real war?
This is the world of SOFTAIR.
The motivations that lead to participate are the most disparate,
as the social realities from which lovers of this sport/game come,
reality that would be never in touch are shooting at the enemy,
shoulder to shoulder.
The protagonist of this project is
Simon aka Sergeant Ramirez, 24th Marines Expeditionary Unit.
Simon is a young precarious, born in the Dominican Republic,
Now he lives in Rome, in multi-ethnic neighbourhood of San Lorenzo, where
so many young people from all over Italy and all over the world live a reality
made up of short-term project contracts and dreams of quick profits.
Softair is a chance of integration, playing war shares intense emotions with unknown people.
Despite all this is fiction, the atmosphere is true and sincere
are human relationship that are established between paricipants.
Friendship, envy, hate, submission, admiration, loyalty, all feelings
and relationship that inevitably throw in any group of people
and during any interaction between individuals.
With this long-term project, I am examining in depth
the concepts of social and sociability, conflicts,
deviations, and definition of roles, especially in places of male aggregation,
stressing the absolute importance of different environment
from which everyone comes.
